Goats on the Greenway
The Goats on the Greenway Project is one of our most unique and eco-friendly park initiatives. Each season, a herd of goats is brought in to naturally clear overgrown vegetation and invasive plants throughout Ivey Terrance Park. This sustainable approach helps maintain the park’s beautiful walking trails and native landscape without the use of heavy machinery or harmful chemicals.
In addition to keeping the park healthy, the goats have become a local favorite, drawing visitors of all ages who come to watch them work. The project highlights Gainesville’s commitment to creative environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by and see the goats in action, learn about natural land management, and support ongoing conservation efforts at Ivey Terrace.
The goats have returned home for this year. Look for them again in August of 2026!

Approximately 2 weeks, beginning August 22nd, depending on the speed of their munching. If the project is successful, they may move further down the greenway.

To put it simply, they're 'goatscaping'! Instead of using City staff or subcontracting a large-scale invasive species removal, the goats will eat their way through the kudzu, ivy, knotweed, and privet that are taking over the area.

It's economical and environmentally friendly! It would require massive manpower to hand-pull the invasive plants or use chemicals to stop the spreading, whereas goats can do this naturally.

Yes! The plants do not harm the goats. When they are taking a break from grazing, they have a covered area to shelter and access to water. Staff check on them daily and monitor via the Goat Cam!
